I’ve been hearing how amazing Zahav is since it opened 2 years ago (I think?), so I have been incredibly interested to see what all the fuss was about. So on New Year’s Eve, when looking for something to do for dinner, this seemed like as good a time as any.
Dinner was split up into 4 courses that seemed more like 10 or so, because rather than the picking one option per course as I had assumed when reading the prix fixe menu, we actually got everything listed, so it was an endless parade of food to the table. First was the salad and hummus course. I actually think this was my favorite course. There were 8 little bowls of different salads, ranging from fairly straightforward salad to pickled cauliflower and something that tasted like curried okra (which was awesome).
Second course had hits and misses. I made the poor decision of assuming that we’d be selecting from the menu rather than getting EVERYTHING, so Jen was left out of a lot of the dishes that had meat in them. There was a pastry with shredded lamb in it that I thought was great, and another pastry stuffed with potato and cheese that I liked a lot. Also some kind of soup thing with egg that was tasty as hell. The crudo wasn’t really my style, but Heather seemed to love it.
Main course was half and half for me. One thing that I had thought was an olive dish was actually a whole fish (I still have no idea what kind of fish) that smelled extremely fishy, was a lot of work to debone, but actually had very little flavor to it. The quail confit was good too, but seemed a little bland that late in the meal. The foie gras with the quail was really good, but it weirded me out to eat a little. Then came dessert, which was pretty good too.
Overall, I was a little disappointed with all the hype it’s been getting, and thought it was on the pricy side, but it was still a pretty good meal. I’d like to try it again on a non-fixed menu to compare.
